Smithfield Pig Save was formed on the morning of July 31st, 2015 after a video released by Toronto Pig Save went viral. The video captured animal rights activists offering water to pigs on a transport truck during a heat wave. One pig in particular lay dying on the floor. It was decided that Smithfield needed a Pig Save group as well.
Smithfield Foods is the largest pig killing company in the entire world, killing over 32,000 pigs EACH DAY. Their offices and plants span across areas of both Virginia and North Carolina. An estimated 10,000 intelligent, sentient pigs die at the slaughterhouse in Smithfield VA. After living their entire lives on cramped, filthy factory farms, the pigs are loaded onto trucks and hauled many miles in all weather extremes without access to food or water, destined for a terrifying, painful slaughter.
Smithfield Pig Save aims to maintain a peaceful approach while bearing witness to pigs at the end of their journey to the slaughterhouse. We feel by bearing witness and documenting their suffering through photos and video, that we will be able to educate the public about the horrors of the animal agriculture industry. We also advocate for a cruelty free lifestyle and offer help in transitioning to a vegan diet.
Smithfield Pig Save is a non-profit organization and relies on the support of donors to fund our campaigns. We could not do it without you! Special thanks to:
